🎃 October Highlights: Tricks, Treats & New Opportunities Down Under

This month’s theme: the scariest thing is missing your shot at a once-in-a-lifetime career move.

Key roundup

2025 Aussie Skill Shortage Highlights

October brought a fresh update from Australia’s government—revealing where the biggest opportunities are for US professionals looking to make the leap Down Under!

Big picture:
Almost 1 in 3 jobs in Australia still struggle to find enough skilled talent, especially outside the major cities.

That’s great news tho if you’re in health care, construction trades, engineering, or IT/cybersecurity—these sectors are actively looking for global talent and migration is on the agenda.

What is the Occupation Shortage List (OSL)?
The OSL is Australia’s official “help wanted” list: an always-updating menu that shows which jobs are nationally or regionally in shortage. It guides immigration rules and fast-tracks applications for skills Australia needs most. Most states use this to target foreign talent and fill workforce gaps fast.

Hot right now:

  • Healthcare (nursing, aged care, radiology, allied health)

  • Construction trades (electricians, plumbers, carpenters)

  • IT & cybersecurity (specialists, cloud engineers, network experts)

  • Engineering (civil, mechanical)

  • Tourism roles such as chefs

  • Teachers, trainers, and yes... experienced hair stylists! ✂️

Regional bonus:
Opportunities are booming beyond Sydney and Melbourne. Regional jobs often get priority visas, perks, and relocation help.

What’s out?
Some jobs—like software engineers and project architects—have dropped off the shortage list for 2025. But new roles in health, science, and frontline trades have jumped on, so check the full list before you apply!
